Sign Regulations 2007
On 1 November, the new signs regulations outlined in Chapter 1 of Part 7 of the The Safety Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 came into force.
Your Responsibilities
- Safety signboards put in place after 1 November cannot include information in text.
- Safety signboards put in place after 1 November should provide information or instruction using a combination of colour and symbols only.
- Symbols or pictogams on a signboard are intended to be understood independently of the language ability of the employee viewing it.
- Text may be included on a supplementary signboard, provided it does not have a negative impact on the safety signboard’s effectiveness.
- Employers must provide information to employees on the meaning and requirements of any signs used in the workplace, especially where text on supplementary signboards is used.
What about existing Signs?
Any signboard already in place before 1 November that contains text but meets all other requirements of Part 7 and Schedule 9 to the General Application Regulations 2007, may remain in place until 1 January 2011.
