Hearing Protection

Identifying the Hazards

To establish the level of noise in your environment, it is necessary to carry out a noise survey. Depending on the scale and resources available, it may be advisable to involve external consultants in this task. Anderco Safety can offer information on accessing these services as well as on the purchase of noise meters. For further details, contact our Technical Helpdesk on 1850 303 304.

Types of Protectors Available

Ear Muffs
A common form of ear prtoection, earmuffs protect against a very wide spectrum of noise levels. It is important to study the noise reduction or attenuation characteristics of each model as they vary in performance across a wide range of sound frequencies. For a Safety Officer, they are easier to enforce than earplugs, being much more visible.

Helmet Mounted Ear Muff
Where a combination of hazards exist, and it is required that hearing protection, as well as head protection is worn, this is a popular option.

Ear Muffs With Built-in Radio
Hearing protection that provides the facility to enjoy news, sport and music at work.

Electronic Hearing Protection
The latest in sound technology – hearing protectors which amplify weak sounds while reducing loud noises. These are normally battery operated.

ommunication Head Sets
For workers covering large areas within a noisey environment – ear muffs that incorporate communication systems.

Plugs
Can be worn conveniently with all other PPE items. Easy to use, with attenuation provided often exceeding that of ear muffs, they provide excellent protection with long term comfort.

Banded & Corded Plugs
Banded versins are favoured for carrying around the neck when not in use. Ideal for short term use and visitors. Most standard plugs are available in a corded version of ease of carrying when not in use.

Detectables
Metal detectable with bright, easy-to-see, colours. Ideal for the food industry.

Accessories

  • Ear muff covers, to fit over the earmuff custhoions absorbing perspiration in hot working environments or bundling up warmth in the cold.
  • Ear muff hygiene kits. Regular replacement of the cushions ensures that the earmuff gives the protection that it is designed to give.
  • Ear muff belt clip. Allows ear muffs to be stored safely and comfortably in the belt when not in use.
  • Ear plug storage box. Personal issue storage box, which allows for the safe and hygienic storage of earplugs when not in use.

Care & Maintenance

Ear muffs should be inspected regularly as the cushions in particular may deteriorate with use and should be examined at frequent intervals for cracking and leakage. If the cushions become hard, damaged or deteriorated, they should be replaced promptly using the appropriate hygienic kit. Ear muffs should be mintained by regular cleaning with a mild disinfectant. A gentle wipe is all that is required, taking care not to wet the foam. When not in use, ear muffs should be stored in a clean, dry container or locker. Ear plugs are generally disposed of after use, however there are a range of reusable plugs which can be cleaned with a mild disinfectant solution.

Corporate Identification

Certain models of ear muffs and plugs are suitable for customising to reflect your corporate identity. Minimum quantities may apply.
