Head Protection

Identifying the Hazards

There are two main categories of hazards that head protectors can be used for:

  • Danger from falling mass.
  • Accidental bumping of the head.

Types of Protectors Available

There are two product types available to provide protection from the two hazard categories: helmets and bump caps. Helmets, offering a significantly higher level of protection can be used to safeguard agains falling mass and accidental bump contact. Bump caps do not offer protection against falling mass. Helmets can be provided with rain channels and air ventilation. However, these are not always suitable to the work environment and cannot be used, for example, in a chemical site.

Accessories

Care & Maintenance

The helmet or bump cap shell my be cleaned with soap and water and dried with a soft cloth. They should not be cleaned with abrasive substances or solvents and must not be stored in direct sunlight or in contact with chemicals. Helmets should be regularly inspected by the wearer. Any helmet showing more than superficial abrasions or scuffing to the shell should be replaced. Given the amount of wear that most head protection receives, it is unlikely that any can offer adequate protection after 2 to 3 years general usage.
