Identify the Hazards
Suitable eye wear protection should be selected in consideration of the type of hazard present, as well as the type of protector and lens required.
There are four main hazard categories
- Mechanical – flying debris, dust or molten metal.
- Chemical – fumes, gases or liquid splash.
- Radiation – heat (infra-red), ultraviolet light or glare.
- Laser – light over a wide spectrum of wave lengths from ultraviolet to infra-red.
Types of Protectors Available
Safety Faceshield Protects the face, as well as the eyes, but does not keep out dust or gas. Comfortable for use over long periods.
Safety Goggle Provides protection against a variety of hazards. Excellent for splash and impact protection. May be worn over spectacles.
Safety Spectacles Comfortable, and available in a variety of styles. Generally, not suitable for keeping out gas, dust or molten metal. Certain models available with prescription lenses. Largely impact resistant.
Shade of Lenses
Various shades of lens are available for specialised industries, such as foundries, glass working and welding. Certain lens shades can enhance vision for tasks, such as inspection. For further information on specialised applications, contact Anderco’s Technical Helpdesk on 1850 303 304.

Care & Maintenance
Both employee and employer have a responsibility to maintain all eye protection in good order.
Eye wear may be cleaned with soap and water and dried with a soft cloth. However, it is recommended that specialised care products be used. Eye wear should not be cleaned with abrasive substances or solvents and must not be stored in contact with chemicals.
Eye wear should be inspected regularly and any eye wear showing abrasions or scuffing should be replaced. Given the treatment that most spectacles receive, it is unlikely that they would offer adequate protection after one year’s general usage.
